Rendering in Barnstaple & North Devon

External render that looks good, keeps the weather out and suits your building – from new finishes to stripping and re-rendering failed walls. We’ve been lime rendering for over 25 years, and have spent more than 10 years rendering and skimming new-build homes.

Expert rendering for any finish

We can create almost any finish you’re after, and duplicate, mould and straighten walls to get a true, even result. Where old render has cracked, blown or is trapping damp, we remove it and reinstate it with a product and style that suits the property.

There is a wide range of colours and textures to choose from, and all our work is fully insured.

Render removal and re-rendering

We remove old sand and cement render and re-render the wall. Where render has cracked, blown or come away, or is trapping damp in the wall behind it, we hack it off, assess and repair the wall underneath, then re-render – in a new modern render, or in breathable lime where the wall needs it.

On older cob and stone buildings, hard cement render is a common cause of damp, because it stops the wall drying out. On a railway cottage in Instow, failed sand and cement was replaced with lime inside and out, which cured the damp. Read more about lime rendering and heritage work.

Render systems we work with

Sand and cement

The traditional render for modern masonry. Strong and hard-wearing, usually finished with masonry paint.

Silicone render

A through-coloured thin-coat render that repels water and resists algae and staining well, so it stays cleaner for longer. Good for exposed spots.

Acrylic render

A flexible, through-coloured finish available in many colours and textures. Less prone to fine cracking than traditional render.

Insulated render systems

Insulation boards fixed to the outside of the wall, then rendered. They can reduce heat loss through solid walls and give the house a fresh finish at the same time.

Lime render

Breathable and flexible – the right choice for most cob, stone and older solid-walled buildings. More on lime rendering →

Render that stands up to North Devon weather

Homes along the North Devon coast take a lot of wind-driven rain and salty air. Choosing the right render for the wall, and getting details like beads, drips and the junctions around windows right, makes a big difference to how long it lasts. On older buildings, the wrong render – often cement on a wall that needs to breathe – is one of the most common causes of damp.

Frequently asked questions

Can you remove old sand and cement render?

Yes. We hack off failed or cracked sand and cement render, check and repair the wall underneath, then re-render it – in a modern render, or in breathable lime where the wall needs it.

Do I need permission to render my house?

For most houses, re-rendering like for like is straightforward. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, you may need consent, so check with North Devon Council or Torridge District Council before work starts.

Can you repair a small area of render?

Yes. We can patch and repair render, matching the existing finish as closely as possible. Sometimes a larger area needs replacing if the render around a crack has come away from the wall.

What is the best time of year to render?

Render needs to cure without freezing or drying too quickly, so very cold or very hot spells are avoided. We plan the work around the weather.
