Smooth ceilings without the mess of stripping
Artex and similar textured coatings were very popular from the 1960s to the 1980s. In most cases the simplest and cleanest way to get rid of them is to plaster over the top. We prepare the surface, apply the right coats to cover the texture, and finish with a smooth skim ready for decorating.
A note on asbestos
Textured coatings applied before 2000 may contain a small amount of asbestos. It is generally low risk while left undisturbed, but it should not be sanded, scraped or drilled without precautions. If you are unsure, a sample can be tested by a specialist lab before work starts. Covering the coating with plaster avoids disturbing it. The HSE website has more guidance on asbestos in the home.
