Internal Wall Insulation in Barnstaple & North Devon

A warmer home and lower heating bills: we insulate solid external walls from the inside to cut heat loss – finished with a smooth skim, ready to decorate.

Warmer rooms, lower heating bills

Many North Devon homes have solid stone, cob or brick external walls with no cavity to fill. They lose heat quickly and can feel cold and damp to the touch. Internal wall insulation means fixing insulation to the inside face of those walls, then boarding and skimming over it – a practical way to beat rising energy bills without changing the outside of the house.

Because it is fitted room by room, it suits homes where external insulation isn’t possible or wanted, such as terraces and properties in conservation areas.

The boards we use

For internal wall insulation and insulated dry lining we use Celotex insulated plasterboard: a plasterboard face bonded to a rigid PIR foam insulation layer. The boards are fixed to the wall, then skimmed smooth – as on our job in South Molton.

What’s involved

  1. We check the wall first – any damp or water penetration must be fixed before insulating. Damp proofing →
  2. Insulation boards are fixed to the inside of the external wall, using a system chosen to suit the wall and the room.
  3. Details around windows, sockets and skirting are worked out so the room still functions well.
  4. The new surface is skimmed smooth, ready for decorating. Plastering & skimming →

Older solid walls

Cob, stone and other traditional walls need to manage moisture, so the insulation and finish should be chosen carefully – sometimes a breathable system is the better option. For example, on our lime and eco-cork renovation in Welcombe, breathable cork insulation was used alongside lime. Lime & heritage work →

Frequently asked questions

Will internal wall insulation make my rooms smaller?

Slightly – the wall gets thicker by the depth of the insulation and board. We’ll talk through the options for each room.

Is it messy?

It involves taking the room back to the wall, so furniture needs to be moved out. We protect the rest of the house and leave it clean and tidy.
